Xfce is een lichtgewicht desktop omgeving voor unix-achtige besturingsssystemen. Het doel is om snel en lichtgewicht te zijn, terwijl het visueel aantrekkelijk en makkelijk in gebruik is. 

Xfce 4.6 embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and re-usability. It consists of a number of components that together provide the full functionality of the desktop environment. They are packaged separately and you can pick and choose from the available packages to create the best personal working environment.

Een andere prioriteit van Xfce 4 is de samenhang met verschillende standaarden gedefineerd op freedesktop.org.

Xfce 4 kan geinstalleerd worden op verschillende UNIX platformen. Het staat bekend te werken op Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, Cygwin en MacOS X, x86, PPC, Sparc, Alpha...
